The Ultimate Mimbo Pro Design!

Alright ladies and gents, I’m a few days behind schedule on my Tweak A Week giveaway due to some errors setting up the theme, but regardless, I’m moving forward and as promised here is a sneak peak at what “Robin” of NOAFILM.be is getting!

The Re-Design of the Re-Design

As mentioned in an earlier post, MimboPro is a bit of a pain in the butt to set up. I was pretty stressed out about it for about a day and a half until Darren offered some help. I’ve got to give it to him, that’s one great way to earn the respect of your peers. So, Darren… good show.

There is a but… The image issue is still not fixed making it hard for me to properly code and test the css and background images the way I need to in order to make this one kick ass theme tweak! After a few days of back and forth with no prevail, I decided to go ahead and re-design, the re-design. So what you see is actually the second version which isn’t as in depth as I would have liked, but hell it got the job done and is looking pretty fricken awesome!

Bunches of changes!

I’ve moved a few elements around, changed some CSS, and of course… I went bonkers with the graphics to just set this MimboPro showcase over the top. I used a number of design stratagies when thinking of both of these re-designs and I’ll be going over those in a later post so don’t worry, I won’t leave you hangin’!

As for the screenshot, you’ll notice that those pesky thumbnails still aren’t showing, so once Darren gets it fixed for me, I’ll be able to get it all finished up with the final little touches.

Comparing apples to apples… I’d like to know.

Just to show you guys what some of the other proud MimboPro theme owners have done, I’m going through the task of putting a few of Darren’s showcase links in here for ya. Take a gander… compare notes… and let me know what you guys think of the ULTIMATE MimboPro re-design!

Like tips… great feedback is always welcome!

Now I’m sure that asking for feedback might be like asking for a hole in the head, but I’d like to know what you guys and gals think so far. You know… motivation! We all need it and with so many install headaches and two re-designs just to accommodate the silly error, I’d like to think I’m on the right path with things anyway.

Get your own theme tweak…

Remember that you have way to many chances to get yourself your own custom theme tweaks by yours truly by just checking out some recent posts where I’m selling my soul for some traffic.

PB, that is looking pretty awesome so far. I really like what you have done with Robins site and I cannot wait to see the end result. I have a feeling that you are going to do Robin and Darren proud!!!

  2. Mrs. Piss Says:

    Mr. PB.

I have to say that you have done it once again. Your RE-DESIGN is impeccable. I love ALL your work.

Thank you for making the blog world a better place for all of us!

In Belgium we have a saying to never look a horse in the mouth that has been given as a present but since you ask for it. :)

I think you have done a great job in making an otherwise repetitive looking theme stand out much more, it’s a theme that will definitely be remembered if visitors ever pass by again.

I really like the desktop look you created which tells something about us, it makes me think about the look Matt “unlucky in cards” had with his agenda, coffee cup and the stains from it on his site. I know I had been asking for removing the boundaries but actually you are doing the same but by extending the site beyond it boundaries. It gives to me the impression to be looking through the eyes of the owner, I have been trying to do something similar in the past but I never managed to get it right, it even gives new possibility for changing your desktop look every year or so just by replacing the jpg of png files on the server. Because you coded it right now it would just be a matter of keeping the same file dimensions and keeping the site boundaries into consideration, no?

I do have a concern though, one of my remarks was that my site looked too full on the front page. Mimbo pro has a lot of photo’s on the front page, in the carousel, the feature and the category posts. It is visually nice too look at but will adding all the photo’s outside the sites boundaries not enhance that “too full” feeling? The first impression when you arrive at the front page will be all those photos filling your screen up, will this not cause confusing for new visitors?

I also like the agenda on top, but, it would have looked more “real” if it was lying on top instead of partially underneath the navigation but I know I’m as we say in Belgium; “mierenneuken” or literally translating “antf*cking” or like you say “nitpicking” :)

So far so good but the thumbnailing must be working to get a clear view, now it’s like looking at a building without furniture.

Anyway, you have impressed me, inspite all your thumbnail problems, to make this change so quickly, can’t wait to see it in action on my site. :)

  4. PB Says:

@ Mrs. Piss: I think your my biggest fan!

@ Robin: I’m glad that I could impress you but to be honest it’s not what I was planning on doing. My initial design was clean a specious with some life like accents… but I had to keep up with the darn contest and try and get it done in a week.

My dumb server had some anti script code in it that kept blocking the image thumb nailing system from working. That said, I went with more graphic teaks than anything as it’s hard to test image mapping when you can’t upload images.

I think while you were looking for something spacious and less cluttered… this design will lend itself to a more personal flexible touch. You can re-arrange the items, photos and trinkets so that your site is never to boring. Will your visitors be confused? Nah… but just in the spirit of compromise, I’ll re- do some things tonight and set up a live version for every one to vote on.

Finally the little note book (agenda)… I’ll play with some more options to see if I like something better. In the meantime… you failed to mention one thing I thought for sure you’d have a problem with… your logo.

  5. robin Says:

There are some other small details i need to consider beside the logo before it could go live on my site; the logo, yes, that’s a bigger problem. The logo I have on my site now in the top left corner is on my business cards, my letters, my car… and is a part of my company identity so that should remain.
Other things that I need to change is the “navigation”, “search” and “recent” text which has to be in Dutch.
And last the slideshow on the front page which I specially purchased to highlight my services needs to be incorporated as well were now the feature article is. At least, that is what I think were it should be, don’t know if you have another suggestion for that.
For the rest it will be small changes in what will be displayed on the frontpage, f.i. the recent category will the be news category because I don’t want any blog topics on the “above the fold” part of the front page. The main attention of my site is still my business, the blog comes second. That’s why I found it good that you “detached” the recent comments and blogroll section on the bottomside of the site, it’s still there but a bit separate from the rest of the site and that was good.
Also the category in the center of the page which I did replace with a video now I am not so sure if I want to use it in that way, I could f.i. place a video were now the feature is? Not sure about that, the carousel that you changed to the top was good as the photo’s are a important part but I’d like video to be highlighted as well which was the reason why I included a video on the front page and since I can follow how many times it has been looked at I can see that it works.
That you can rearrange the photo’s around the site is very good, it was by far the coolest change you made :)

  6. PB Says:

@ Robin: How about the words in Dutch sir? I can change them, but I no a speak a Dutch! ;-)

Let me ask you Robin… there is a chance.. albeit a slim one… that this isn’t the design for you. Could it be that maybe it’s just not what you’re looking for? I promise, my feeling will not be hurt.

I gave it a whirl and if it’s not up to par… well, there’s always another day.

  7. Robin Says:

    Navigation: Navigatie
    Search: Zoek
    Recent: Nieuws

About the design, I really like it, seriously. But you know I first asked for removing the side boundaries, I did accidentally see your first mock up which had this wide appearance on top and that i also liked it a lot. I think that design would give a less cluttered appearance.
But seeing your new design, I see more possibilities, the only concern I had was that with all the photo’s/ipod and such around it, it would enhance the cluttered feeling.
I’m just thinking out loud now but would it be a lot of work to align the site to the left? Like this: http://www.notyouraveragejoe.com/
In that way the photos/ipod and stuff outside the site boundaries are only positioned on one side (the right side) making it less cluttered? It’s just a thought.

  8. PB Says:

@ Robin: I’ve gotten your e-mail as well just to let you know. Okay so here are my thoughts.

The design I did focuses on the design itself to sell the content… on most “blogs”… the content may be a little boring so an interesting “busy” design suits them well. YOUR site on the other hand, needs to “showcase” your awesome content. It’s beautiful work that you do so it’s only fair that it becomes the focus of your visitors attention… not the background images or fun little gadgets.

So what’s a guy to do? I’m not sure as of this moment. I waned to make these “tweaks” not total “re-designs”. I know that you have not requested a “re-design” so it’s by no means your fault.

I think, I’m going to try and work on one more option for you, but incorporating so many existing items (logo, slide show, gallery plugins, videos) means that it could take a little while. I work on it at night after 15 hour work days… so bare with me here and I’m sure I’ll get it sorted out.

  9. Robin Says:

I feel like a kid in front of a Christmas tree :)
I only hope that all your work will pay off, once people can see what you are capable of requests will be flying in, I’m sure.

If you need anything, just let me know, if you need a copy of the slideshow plugin, just shout.

  10. PB Says:

SHOUT! :-) Send it on over please! Oh and maybe some videos…. just a handful not tons just enough for testing purposes.

Thanks Robin I hope you’re right about the work coming in!

  11. Robin Says:

Just send a mail to you with all required stuff

  12. PB Says:

Perfect… one last question. I took a look at the example sites you liked and noticed that the one thing in common with them was the simplicity of the design. What style do you picture for yourself.

Real life (the one I just did)
    Clean and modern
    Gradients and textures
    Vintage

Those are just a few to choose from, but a solid direction might help me get back on track as well.

  13. robin Says:

Well, I do like real life, clean and modern sites with some gradients en textures ans preferably vintage touches. :D

Seriously, actually real life has the most appeal, I do like very clean modern sites as well because they put all attention to your content.
Some sites I like in terms of design:

    http://www.hebatec.de/

and one of the coolest looking sites out there:
    http://veerle.duoh.com/

So, when I get to think about it, real life designs like the one you did had a unique touch to it, like looking into the life of the owner with his photo’s, dvd’s, his notebook, ipod, mobilephone or whatever lying around and not to forget, the cup of coffee. :)

But then again, I also really liked the first mock up I accidently saw some days ago that you did were you removed the sites vertical boundaries on the top part of the site.

What exactly is vintage, do you have an example site?

  14. robin Says:

Or a combination of real life but without the vertical boundaries like this one:
    http://www.wireandtwine.com/

  15. PB Says:

@ Robin: Well sir, you’ve really helped out so thank you. I see that I’ve got my work cut out for me, but I’ll get there you watch!

I think one of the most difficult parts of the whole things is the language barrier… I can’t read your blog so I’m not sure where things are and in what order… for example… in your slideshow gallery it looks like it’s displaying your customer packages… however, I’m not sure what the “excerpt” next to it says or if it has anything to do with you products… does that make sense?

So here is what I propose… I’ll work something up using the hints you’ve given me. I’ll design it to display materials that I feel are in the best use of design practice… if you like it, great! If you still don’t think it’s for you, no problem.

Initially, I had something really neat going. But because my server was spastic, and the images were not displaying, I switched concepts mid design.

When I started reading all of your requests in the past few comments I started to realize I was losing my focus and the overall point of the giveaway. I need to stay focused on the goal… standard design practices! I’ve got to design it the way I see fit. From there, it’s all yours! So, let me work on it a bit more, and I’ll put up yet another live demo for the world to see… then after we both get some community feedback, we can make some decisions from there.

  16. robin Says:

Well actually the structure of my site is pretty straightforward, the frontpage slide features some of my packages and the excerpt says something about each package. If you click on that slideshow it then takes you to the page with all the info of that package. I did put the main focus on that slideshow because that’s the first thing my clients will see and it highlights what I offer.

Also on the front page the blue navigation buttons on the left side with names videopakket 1, videopakket 2 (with the prices) and so on all are links to my packages.

On the right side of the slideshow you have the news (nieuws) section which display special discounts on pacakages or important news related to my packages or just anything I consider important enough for my clients to see.

then ofcourse the carousel which displays all photo events and just below that I removed the category pages that were originally incorporated and placed one video which is always my latest video I have done.

On the right side of the video it’s also image links to some packages or services I offer or it could be an advertisment.

In the lower left corner of the footer section the small video is a promovideo of the “chatbox” I rent out (it’s an unmanned camera with a mic and people can speak their wishes in it, very popular around these area’s :)

The rest of the footersection displays my last blogpost and comments

On top of the site there is then the tab “video” and “photo” which each lead to the demo’s of our photo’s and video’s (duh)

and the “blog” tab goes to the…. :)

    That’s actually it

And on the posts in the blog or on the pages were I display my packages I reserve the left side for advertisement.

That’s actually it, but to me it looks like you really need to get some sleep, was it 3 at night when you wrote this? (never understood what am or pm actually stood for) Here it’s now 10:40 in the morning.

  17. robin Says:

Just curious (actually not, I just can’t wait to see what you have been cooking) but can you give us (especially me:)) a peek of the masterpiece re-design that awaits to rule the world?

  18. Robin Says:

PB, can you shine a bit of light in the darkness? If you don’t have the time for this project or if you decided to not continue with it, I understand and I’m sure the other possible “winners” of your tweak a week contest would as well.

  19. PB Says:

@ Robin: Today Americans celebrate their independence from England. It’s a national holiday so I went to hte beach with my family…

As for the tweaks… I’m still going about it as planned. Frankly though, all the repeated delays and my little mis-direction on the design, has me way behind. Family, then work, then freebies. It’s the food chain of my life. I’ll send you a little light very soon. Thanks for the patience!

  20. robin Says:

No worries mate, my attitude towards this freebee thing is that you do whatever and whenever you want to or don’t want to.
It was only that you started really enthusiastic and then suddenly it looked like it was going to die a slow death since you stopped giving updates or answers. :)

  21. Bea Says:

    PB -
I see where you visited our website and clicked on the link, bringing me here! I was so surprised to see our website listed here on your site! And at the top of the list, too! Woohoo!!!

Thanks for listing us! I certainly have not tweaked anything within the theme to make it more unique, since I know absolutely nothing about php coding! But we are happy with the theme and what we’ve been able to do with it. Our site is different from other rubber stamping magazines out there, and that’s what we were shooting for!

    Thanks again!
    Bea
