Well it’s Monday afternoon, it’s pouring down rain, and I’m busier than ever. Anyway I thought it would be a great way to start off the week, by talking a little bit about what’s been going and and where I’m heading. It’s all a part of my decision to be proactive in my business and so on the blog it goes.

I’m a Woo Themes Forum Ninja

As I’m sure you all have seen, I’m sporting a fancy new banner by the Woo Themes Team. This past week, the head honchos over there, including one of my all time favorite bloggers, Adii, asked if I would help out around the shop and help answer all those mysterious Woo Theme questions. WOW, what a tough job it is! However, I’ve got to say, that honestly it has got to be one of the best forums around. I know that Brian Gardner’s Revolution has some great support too, but man-o-man… The Woo Themes Team really nailed what it is to offer help a fellow blogger. An Ugly Stick Beatdown…. The Quick Version

Sometime last week, I got an e-mail from a guy named Troy or Tam or Twan or Twit… hell I can’t even remember the guys name… asking for an ugly stick beatdown. The funny thing is that he wanted a beatdown on himself. Entrepreneur I am, sadist, I am not… so after a little debate and a bit of arm wrestling… we settled on a fee for a quick mention here on Piss Biscuit. It’s all part of my business plan remember!

Tony… yeh, that’s his name… from RockinDaily.com wants all of you to go and visit his blog. Technically, I’m supposed to beat his blog down, since that is what he paid for, but since it was a partial fee, he gets a partial open handed slap rather than a full fledged uppercut. His blog is a bit boring. His Adsense ads slap you in the face as soon as you log on, so to me it screams monitization. Smells like a flip coming on, but that’s okay if that’s his plan. So in the spirit of showing Tom some love PB style, head on over to RockinDaily.com and leave some hate mail, spam, or even affiliate loaded links. He won’t mind a bit.

PB was up for sale at SitePoint

Some of you slicker site flipping masterminds might have found the listing of PB on sitepoint this past 10 days but now that it’s over I can make fun of myself for trying. I got a few e-mails, a couple of bids, and the auction closed at a whopping $750.00 bucks…LOL. I listed the site more for fun, however if the right buyer had come along, with the right money… I’d walk. But since it didn’t sell for anything worth bragging about, I’ll just jump back on my bandwagon and join the pitty party over at my favorite blogshpere bar… The Lesson Learned Watering Hole”. It was fun, but not very profitable.

Traffic Stats and More

It’s been quite a while since talking about traffic and the myriad of other little goodies that I like to look at, so I’ll throw it in here as part of the Monday warm up. I’m touching on about 63,000 page views, 312 unique visitors a day and growing strong. I hope the trend keeps up in which case I’ll stay motivated… it’s been a while since crying the blogger’s blues… I’d like to keep it that way!

If This Blog Could Talk

Bling Bling Joe from ImwithJoe.com interviewed me this past week for his latest creation IfThisBlogCouldTalk.com. I love the concept and I love what he’s doing with the design. I know the site has been saying “maintenance mode” for a while now, but now that I’ve made a big deal about it… he’ll just have to get his ass into gear. Let’s put the pressure on him people!

It’s Christmas in August

Our buddy Yan, who’s been a bit scarce around these parts lately is holding a pretty damn good contest if you haven’t heard. It’s called Christmas in August and between he and his awesome sponsors… he’s giving away quite a big bag of goodies. Well people the dog has finally bitten it’s owner and the owner… is Vic Franqui of Blogger Unleashed. LOL. He’s just posted a video on how lame Blogger Unleashed is… and that he’s pulling the plug! The funny part of this whole video post, is that it simply proves that you’re a product of your environment. He’s created a beast… a beast mind you, that I said was coming.

Blogger On A Leash

From a psychological point of view Vic is a basket case, or at least that’s my opinion. This dude has plain as day, bashed and complained about every one of his minions that made him who he is today. Suicide. His disciples, have taken what he’s taught, turned on him, spammed everything he owns, reported his sites as keyword stuffed, and the man is surprised! He even makes mention that his “charity cases” are blogging about not making money… Vic hiding out… being thank full they didn’t follow his advice… The list goes on and on Honestly… Vic’s had a target painted on his chest for a while now and I’m a bit surprised that it has taken this long to put that Blogger back on its Leash.

Vic backed away from my $20,000 dollar challenge

In short Vic backed down and gave up. But seeing that he’s not making any money with his “Charity Blog”… $20,000 would be hard for him to come up with anyway… so I’ll give him a pass. As for his claims of making a fortune doing other things… he’s following a sales pitch created by the makers of BANS. Buy BANS. Build 500 websites. Make a dollar day. Be happy. Be wealthy. Did he mention the degradation of the blog market? Nope. How about the dilution? Nope. How about not having a life. Ask AP about what it means to bust your ass for thirty days building a website. Try it with 20 much less 500.

I’ll call this my open offer to Vic. Rather than simply throwing it all way, let me buy it. I’ve got some spare silver change that I can throw at ya. It’s better than nothing right! Hell Vic, I’d even consider giving you the 20K that you would have lost. *Snicker*. Well goodbye Vic, I know I’ll miss your once in a blue moon posts. I’ll miss being booted off of your forums. I’ll regreat never being able to piss off your minions traitors, in your video feed…LOL… the old days, gotta love em.

Vic’s Sad Story Video

Well people it’s about that time of the month again. As TheAffiliatePost has dubbed it… PB Syndrome is in full effect, but this time, you’re convincing is not needed… there is light at the end of the tunnel! As many of you may have noticed, posting as well as commenting has been a bit slow for me over the last week and a half. I’ve had tons of things going on the outside of the internet world that have been finally cleared up and I’m ready to dig in yet again… PB writes again!

It’s Time to Make Money Online

This evil little phrase haunts almost every blogger at one point or another and sometimes more often that we care to admit… even those of us who say we’re bloggin’ just for the hell of it. Making money Online is the proverbial dangling carrot. The national treasure of sorts. We all want to make money and when we see folks around us pushing to get their share… it sends a little jealous streak down some of our spines. I know it does for me, and since I’m not the only one who enjoys making money, I know it does for some others too.

Maintaining our Focus

We’ve all got to maintain focus. Focus on our goals. If those goals are to simply blog for self gratification, great! If it’s to make money online, great! If it’s to create videos… or teach people how to become better at what they do at their jobs, or how to lose weight… the subject matters none. It’s all about setting and achieving our goals. I personally, have failed miserably at goal setting, and have become quite the master at goal breaking. Time for a change people and I’m the first in line to do all out do it.

Cleaning House

I own more domain names than I care to think about with some costing me as little a 5.00 and some costing as much as a few thousand dollars… I’ve built or helped build nearly 600 websites in my time as a designer, and I have yet to complete a project of my own. Is it natural? Is this constant flow of negative energy good for all that Zen? I don’t think so. That said, as part of my mide year resolution, and part of my new outlook on my online business ventures, I’ve got to clean house a little bit. I’ll be selling off some of my totally awesome domains, building up my existing online businesses, and settling in on a few well appointed attempts to get my online life in order.

What’s the point in all of this?

Good question. I’d like to know from each of you, what your goals are. No… I’m not looking for some generic answer like make money… or become rich… of course everyone wants that. I want a list people… the famous list post. I challenge each of you to set your goals… post them online and let the world help you stick to your guns. Here are a few of mine:

Sell off old domains I no longer use.

Finish Building Blogg Fluff or turn it over to someone who can work it like it should.

Complete a project in which has been long time coming.

This ain’t your average flip!

Investing your hard earned money into a business is something that should never be taken lightly. It’s a decision that takes cash, dedication, determination, and of course some good old fashioned guts. But today, there aren’t many online entrepreneurs all that willing to show you the process from start to finish on a real live online property they the intend to keep… This isn’t blog flipping, where we only care about it for a few weeks or even months. My goal is to build another online property that is as if not more profitable than my others. This my friends, is business building entrepreneurship at it’s best. So, grab a cup of coffee, your laptop, and a notebook… this is one lesson you won’t soon find again.

So PB, what did you buy?

As most of you all know by now my background is in design, development so these two diamonds in the rough are perfect for what I love to do. Keeping that in mind, and without further ado, let me introduce to you, “The Banner Queen” and the “Virtual Graphic Artist“! Go ahead AP… you’ve got 30 seconds for Banner “Queen” jokes…

Okay times up… Now both of these websites are obviously lacking a little PB flair and that’s okay. Remember that I bought them to build the business, not just to ride the wave. That said, I’ve got some thoughts on a redesign and I’ve already taken the steps I need to get whole new system going. (Let’s not lie… the new site is just about done) Now before I start getting e-mails privately asking how much I paid for these puppies… the full financial details of the purchases I made are under tight wraps. I can tell you that it was a sizable investment… sizable enough in fact to warrant plenty of time to think about my options as well as what I was buying. Remember, marketing master Rick Butts didn’t raise a fool!

Cry for a little launching help.

There is going to be pretty big release involving the all new VGA, but I don’t think it’s going to be big enough… at least not without your help. Now I’m not one to randomly e-mail you guys and gals asking for a plug… so I’ll do it publicly and hope that I have some takers as I’m sure I will. And even though it is an active operating business… it’s new WordPress theme will be ready for a little well deserved dog and pony show… and that my friends is what I aim to give it. After a long weekend of reading post after post about Page Rank Improvements and of course lack there of, I decided that it was time for post about how to create a successful blog PB style keeping in mind the top 5 ways bloggers screw up their page rank. So why all of a sudden am I oh so willing to write all of this out? Well… to be honest… some of you guys have been pissing me off with some of these and rather than just put up an “Ugly Stick Beat Down” I decided offering a friendly, informative, “Authority Article” would be more beneficial.

You’re not using a “.htaccess redirect”.

Nothing is more aggravating to people like me who take time to write a thoughtful anchor… then it’s discovered the your domain name is spattered across the web in both “www” and “http://” formats! See, not only does that piss us off… but it weakens the “G-Juice Trickle”. To Google, not using a redirect can appear as if you are referring to two different websites. That said, you not only weaken your own rank, but you weaken the value of the outbound link of the author who wrote a little something about you.

You’ve not Updated Your Ping List Dummy

Yeh, I know someone is going to tell me that they’ve got “ping-o-mattic” and that covers it… ha! Okay… you put all your eggs in one basket why don’t ya! Look people, if you don’t have the notifier list updated in your admin panel, then it could take DAYS for your latest post to be listed in the serps. There is nothing worse than finding links through your referral stats rather than you’re serps feed readers! If the serps aren’t showing the backlink, you’re not getting credit Einstein! Oh, did I forget to mention that I’ve already written a post about the importance of the ping list? Yeh, it includes the latest and greatest services to! NOTE: Being listed in the serps is not the same as being indexed… there is a major difference!

Your 404’s are not Re-Directing Either

Nothing pisses off an author more than discovering that their well thought out anchor text to YOUR blog leads to a big fat 404 error. Do you want to lose some Page Rank? How about some love juice from the big “G”? Or how about that oh so valuable anchor text that you worked so hard to earn? I mean c’mon people, I don’t think that there is an easier way to screw yourself and the people who write about you! LOL… What’s ironic is that people often go back and rename their posts for better SEO… the result is a fatty-fo-fatty 404!

Comment Chatting Needs to STOP!

Okay number three was the fastest way you can lose rank… but this my friends is the fastest way to lose readers and more importantly… commentators so listen up. If you’ve got the “Subscribe to Comments” plugin installed… I AM TALKING TO YOU! Over the past three days alone, I’ve been notified of about three hundred comments being added to the blogs I post on and subscribe to. Of those three hundred or so comments, 25 or 30 of them were actually something I wanted to be notified about. What I don’t want to read… is comment chatting… useless banter sent within minutes and sometimes seconds of each other.

Tonight on one of the newer blogs that I read, notified me of 19 comments in under 10 minutes which consisted of nothing more that silly fruitless banter like:

“great post”…”Thanks”…”No problem, glad you liked it”…”yeh man your post was great”… “Thanks man, I appreciate it”….”No seriously, it was really great”…” No dude, if only you were a girl”…

I hope that you get my point. Sure, I could go and cancel my subscription… but that requires work, and I’m to busy for that right? What’s easier for me is to either stop subscribing… or stop commenting. Neither option is good for the blog’s author. So what’s the solution? Try holding back your responses a while. When you as the owner, can respond to five or six comments at once… you can reduce the number of “flaky” comments sent out via e-mail by 60% or 70% and give the spiders time to find your fricken post! After your post is crawled… get stupid with comment chatter on occasion. Just remember that your readers should be respected.

You’re not listed in DMOZ

Okay this one is harder than it sounds. DMOZ is the open source directory… the biggie in fact. More so than Google in fact… and while we’re talking about facts… if you’re listed in DMOZ, you’ll likely be auto indexed by Google within days… not listed… indexed! Ya see the DMOZ directory is run by real people. You submit, they review, and if you’re cool enough, you’ll get listed. It’s a cake walk! (Fat joke at myself).

So when should you apply for a DMOZ listing? When you’re blog starts seeing some traffic, comments, and decent posts… it’s probably a good time to submit. Remember that REAL live people edit each submission… you’ve got to impress someone, not just meet some mathematical criterion. Now keep in mind, that this can take a week or it can take 6 months… but because people are involved, you never can tell.

• Don’t want to get “Sandboxed”? DMOZ it.
• Don’t want to lose your PR? DMOZ it.
• Don’t want to be de-indexed? DMOZ it.

Doing it in under 7 weeks…

This blog will have been live seven weeks on Sunday and what a ride it’s been! That means we’ve brought this baby a long way from it’s ZERO and I’m eating it up like a fat kid on a cupcake. (That was for AP). Though it’s late, and I really would rather be taking a much deserved nap, I know how important this event is for millions of bloggers around the sphere as well as it is for me… so as I sit here ready to collapse, I’ve got to throw out a few congratulatory hip hip hoorays! (errr… how about props?)

The mystery that is Page Rank

Yeh, PR from the big “G” is a mystery and that means that for many just starting out, it’s a mystery of no immediate concern. However, to those of us who are avid bloggers, this little update that Google performs every three months or so can be life or death. Page Rank influences your ability to advertise, monetize, and of course in some cases even gloat a little bit. So for all of you who recived some G-Love, congratulations! To those of you who may have been slapped in the face with baby powder, keep trucking through it, you can always make a change and get right back on the bandwagon.

So what are your stats PB?

Good question… I know it’s been a long while since posting a little something about stats, so I figured I would do it now. Talking about what we’ve done… or not done.

To my surprise, I’ve been told to piss off on more than one occasion when talking to other bloggers about their site stats. They ask for advice… I ask for some facts… i get told to suck an egg. I’m not sure why the secrecy as I feel everyone could offer a little comparative input without divulging some super secret.

Me, I’m pretty open book and I know how much it means to fellow bloggers to have something to compare themselves to. For newbies, its a motivational tool. For old schoolers, it’s a resource for making improvements.

You’ve got homework!

That said, I’m asking each of you to write a post on your blogs about your PR update for better or worse, and talk a little bit about site statistics you’re currently experiencing.This  should incite some great discussions and share in the buzz over yesterday’s PR update. My humble abode…

Okay so this is my desk. Loaded up with an ACER 10 gig machine, two 24 inch HP Hi-Def  180 degree rotational monitors, a Wacom tablet, assorted mice and digital pens, Mr. Potato Head, some Hydroxycut Hardcore, scented oils and candles, as well as my cup of coffee sporting a John Wayne motif.

Oh… I’m sure that you’ll also notice those fancy clubs hanging out back there too. I’m a freak for golf even though I don’t have much time to play these days… none the less, my lady went ahead and bought me a brand new set of graphite clubs to hack around with… but if you look close, you might see that hers are still in a little bit of bubble wrap… gotta get her out there soon.

One place I should visit more…

I’ve put on a little bit of weight in the last 6 months… to the tune of about 40 pounds. That’s a lot of fat my friends and that little bottle of Hydroxycut on my desk just doesn’t seem to be working as planned. Then again, maybe I’m not using it right. Oh well… I’ve got a little workout room here at the office and I keep promising myself to get on at least the freakin’ treadmill. Yeh right.

What you can’t see is how massive the dumbbell set really is. Oh we’ve got a few other goodies in here as well. Medecine balls, 50 pound punching bag, set of free weights and a few other exercise related toys… nope, never used one thing from this room. Not one.

The Conference Room!

This is the place that I close 99% of my deals… unlike other basement hacker firms, I’m proud to present clients with a warm place to write checks and view project progress. Though you can’t see the entire room from this little photo, the table seats 10 people and is accompanied by a 72 inch screen. Pretty impressive stuff.

Some things you won’t see…

The office is equipped with a fingerprint secure server room air-conditioned from the floor up holding about 30 terabytes of free space. Not the largest bank on the planet, but big enough to host the websites and databases of municipalities, banks, airline manufacturers, shipyards and a slew of mom and pop sized companies.

Adding to the servers, secretaries, office space, and modern equipment is the brand new DS3 internet line. Yeh… it’s fiber optic, cost little more than 25,000 bucks and makes T1 connections look like their sleeping.

All in all, I think I’ve got a pretty awesome setup here and it shows in the work I put out. My office is something I’m proud to show, so maybe you guys and gals would like to do the same. Like any business person would do, I spent a few hours last night researching my competition’s SEO techniques to see who I felt would get and keep the viable lead. I got a few great ones, and a few poor ones, but all of them could be improved (myself especially). I hope that you all learned a little something about your blogs. I’m trying once again to share a little knowledge with you all to see every one of you succeed. No body can ever say I’m not a team player! Update Your Freakin Ping list people!

Over the past few days I noticed a pretty drastic increase of traffic… and clueless to where it was coming from. So going through my trustee stats page… I realized that posts were being written about how cool my blog was… and to my dismay, they weren’t being listed on my incoming links feed. After a little research I realized that other bloggers were not notifying the world of their updates when this is one of five things you do to your blog before anything else. Do yourself a favor and make sure you’ve added this in your admin panel!

Well people… I’m about to let a dirty little secret out of the bag and it’s got to do with optimizing your blog’s “Header Tags” to improve search engine rankings within a week. Whoa, say what? Yep, you read it right. Unlike the hundreds of articles out there that explain the value of properly labeling your “<Header>” tags… I’m going to show you something that has literally made my company thousands of dollars in SEO optimization services.

The Value of your <H1> – <H6> tags

As most of you savvy bloggers already know heading tags (H1 through to H6) are given more weight by search engines than regular body copy. You also already should know that they should be used wisely to reinforce the page’s overall targeted keywords. That said there are a few basics that you should be aware of before starting to go bonkers with modifying your blog’s CSS Style Sheets.

Learn the “Header” tag’s true value

Today it’s pretty common practice to have theme designers incorporate the header tags within their style sheets. In fact, more often than not, their ideas are on the mark, but with a few simple tweaks, you can out rank and out index your competition. But first, you’ve got to know the value that search engines assign these little bad boys.

• <H1> = Most valuable Tag in the toolbox. Usually used for the title of a blog.
• <H2> = Second most valuable tag. This is usually found in the “Title” of each post.
• <H3> = My H3 tags can be found in the sidebar. They are bold with a little star next to it.
• <H4> = Generally unused but quite valuable and should be used.
• <H5> = Generally unused but still valuable to most search engines
• <H6> = Generally unused and least valuable, but not to be wasted.

Using the tags within your posts.

I run across COUNTLESS blogs everyday where authors don’t ever utilize the Header tag in their posts and it’s mind boggling to me. With the release of WordPress 2.5, the simple drop down menu at the top left o your editing screen makes this once aggravating task, beyond simple. Use them.

Helpful in more than one way

Look at my bright pink title above. That my friends is all it take to ass a little style and SEO love juice to your posts! It really couldn’t be more simple. I’m going to try and keep it simple so combining good design, great copyrighting practices and a little SEO fuel, here i my list of why you should use tags within a post.

Heading Tags can be aesthetically pleasing to read.

Header tags break up the monotony of a long winded posts.

“H” TagsHelp direct your readers to focus on your content.

Subliminally gives anxious readers small achievable goals.

Allows you to re-enforce staple points of your post

Add content space to what my be a short post.

Allows you to insert relevant keywords & phrases

Cuts out the trashy “self spamming” routine

… and those are just to name a few. I kept the list short, because that’s not really what this post is all about. So without further ado, here’s my little secret that can change the way spiders look at your site forever!

Re-Styling your <H> tags!

The look and style of your “Header” tags are controlled within you blog’s main style sheet. Usually, named style.css. Now I’ won’t go into lessons of coding CSS because every design is different, but I will tell you that with a few simple tweaks, you can add even more punching power to your posts. How? Ha ha…. just restyle them to match your body text.

Choosing the right tags to alter

Since the <H4>, <H5> and <H6> tags are almost ALWAYS under utilized, we are going to start with those. The idea is a simple one. Edit your last three available head tags to mimic the style of your body text. Huh? It’s easy I promise! Here is an example of body text I’ve got:

font-family: Georgia, “Times New Roman”, Times, serif;
font-size: 11px;

As you can see the color of the font is not quite black, the font is Georgia, and the size is 11pts. Now we want to locate the <H> tags within our style sheet and modify them to match. For this example… here is an existing <H6> tag that we are going to re-style:

margin:5px 0;
padding:0;
font-size:12px;
color:#333

As you can see there are quite a few differences. But your job is to make the <H6> identical to the <body> tags and don’t worry It’s as easy as a little cut and paste… here is the final code!

color:#333
font-family: Georgia, “Times New Roman”, Times, serif;
font-size: 11px;

Now you’re locked an loaded! Save the file, upload it back to your server and start blogging using this little trick in every one of you posts. Choose your three main keywords and key phrases and order them according to what you find their value to be. The most important words and phrases for you blog should be assigned <H4> and the least important should use <H6> tags. But be consistent! Use the same tags, for the same words and phrases!!!

Some good advice to follow

Now that you’re done writing your awesome post, go back through it, highlight your target copy and simply choose the appropriate tag from the drop down that WordPress oh so graciously provides us (2.5 and higher)…. that’s it! Oh and one thing to remember… using tags is like steroids… DON’T over due it. A handful of tags is worth more than a post loaded with keyword spam (A good example of self spamming) Keyword spam might make you feel good now, but within weeks, you can quietly disappear off the grid and never be found again. So get out there and tweak that CSS!
